First Game Loss Proved Costly

The Central Coast Senior Side drew last year’s winners, Sydney South West (Zone 12), in the first round of the Bowls NSW Seniors Inter-Zone Sides Championship played at Taren Point BC from 16th-18th May 2017. It wasn’t only a tough first-up draw, but the game was played on a slick 16-17 second tifdwarf green in tricky wind conditions, which the Central Coast players had difficulty handling whilst the Zone 12 players seemed to be at home on this  billiard table top surface. By the time the Central Coast players had come to grips with such testing conditions the game was all over, with all three rinks going down in an 80-46 toweling.
But to their credit, they re-grouped over lunch and looked a different side in the afternoon game against a lesser North West NSW Zone 3 side. Both Lindsay Willding (+10) and Bill Constantine (+16) teams recorded good wins to more than offset John Robert’s (-7) second loss of the day.
Game 3 the following morning, was the section decider and Central Coast was up against a confident Illawarra Zone 16 side, who had recorded two wins and were looking to go through the sectional play undefeated. But heavy overnight dew took a couple of seconds off the pace of the green and the Central Coast side started to play to their potential. John Roberts (+12) was back in the winner’s circle along with Bill Constantine (+4) with Lindsay Willdings (-1) playing out a close one. All Zones in this Section lost a game with Zones 12 and 16 finishing just one rink win in front of Zone 15.
Sydney South West, Zone 12 snared the section on margins and went on to defeat Sydney Northern, Zone 9 in the semi-final (59-54). In the other semi- final, Newcastle Zone 2 proved too strong over Sydney Central South Zone 13 (73-55).
The final was a closely contested affair with Newcastle Zone 2 running out winners over Sydney South West Zone12, 57-51.
