The 2023 John Smith OAM Shield was held at Hakekulani on 28th and 29th January 2023. The Open and Senior sides of Zones 2 (Newcastle), 6 (Hunter), 10 (Sydney North West) and 15 (Central Coast) contested the event with 96 players taking to the greens.
The event honours John Smith OAM who is a life member and past president of Newcastle who worked closely with other Zones in his capacity as the Chair of the Bowls NSW Match Committee. A position that John served in for 13 years. John also represented Newcastle as a bowler for 206 games.
Newcastle in a major achievement on the weekend won both the Open and Seniors elements of the 2023 event. In the photo below John is presenting Mark Conway the President of Zone 2 (Newcastle) with the shield. The Scoreboard for the event is below.
