Canton Mixed Bowlers Presentation Day 2019
Members were served an excellent three course meal (of which the author rather overindulged in, and paid the price by having to hit the Mylanta that night).
The entertainment for the event was supplied by the popular husband and wife duo of “Brassick” who play a wide range of music comprising Country, Popular and, as it's in the season, Christmas tunes. Bob King and Merle Jenkins were the “stars on the dance floor”.
The Championship winners called up by President Dave Gooch to receive their awards were for;
Mixed Triples Winners, Yvonne Kidd, Ralph Webb and Paul Pollack with Runners-Up, Bob Baker, Betty Roffey and Mal Chapman.
Mixed Pairs Winners, Betty Roffey, Linn Bourke (sub) and Doug Roffey. Betty couldn't play the Semi-final and Final due to medical reasons, so Linn substituted.
Runners-Up were Fay Tilley and Frank Butler.
Canton Mixed Bowlers also ran the Toukley District Men's Mixed Pairs Championship which was won by the team of Fay Tilley and Peter Hamill with Runners-Up, Karen Murry and Kevin Hayes.
The Dream Team Award went to Noel Cannard, Cathie Jeffery, Grahame Stear and Betty Roffey while the Guess the Lollies Competition was won by Adele Alessio.
Successful social groups are only possible with the support of dedicated committee members, and President Dave thanked his team for their effort over the year.
Canton Mixed Bowlers meet for a game each Thursday at Canton Beach Sports Club starting at
12:30 pm.

Canton Mixed Bowlers Mixed Pairs Championship 2019.
Frank and Fay won the first end by one shot, but then Doug and Linn “put-the-pedal-to-the-metal” and rattled off 10 straight ends to lead 16-1 at end 11 before Frank and Fay struck back with a 3 shot win on end 12.
However, Frank and Fay were only able to score a further 3 shots as Doug and Linn powered away again to take the title 22 shots to 7 at end 20.
With Doug and Linn on an unbeatable lead, end 21 was not played.
Frank Butler is to be commended for a 'gutsy' performance as he took to the green not at his best having just been discharged from hospital after being treated for a virus.
The semi-final, played two weeks earlier, was a 'nail-biter' with Doug and Linn pitted against the team of Alan Carpenter and Judy O'Connor.
With both teams putting in an entertaining exhibition of bowls, the score was tied at 20-20 after 21 ends and the match was forced into a one end 'tie-breaker'.
The extra end 'tie-breaker' was also a nail-biter with both teams in overdrive and at the end the Umpire had to be called to decide a close measure, with Doug and Linn being declared the winner.

Canton Mixed Bowlers Charity Pink Day.

This year's chosen charity was the Shirley Shuttle, a low cost transport service to cancer sufferers who otherwise would have great difficulty getting to and from their cancer treatment appointments.
The Shirley Shuttle service receives no funding from the government and relies solely on volunteers, sponsors and donations.
Thanks to Canton Sports Club waiving the green fees, plus bowlers supporting the Cake Auction and raffles, a cheque for $2,100 was presented by Canton Mixed Bowlers President Dave Gooch to Shirley Shuttle representative, Warren Butler.
After morning tea the bowlers took to the greens, resplendent in their pink attire, for a game of Mixed Triples with the winners decided on margins and ends won. The winning team, with a margin of 34 shots, was Geoff Thurston (Skip), Bob Bourke (2nd) and Linn Bourke (Lead).

CANTON BOWLERS DIG DEEP FOR CAMP BREAKAWAY

$2500 was raised during the Camp Breakaway Charity Day held at Canton Beach Sports Club on Thursday 9th May, and marked the ninth year that Canton Mixed Bowlers have held this event.
The format for the day was mixed triples played over two games of 11 ends with lunch in between.
At 10am 84 eager bowlers took to the greens to do battle for the generous prize money on offer and, of course, for the prestige of being declared the winners of a major event on the calendar of Canton Mixed Bowlers.
Camp breakaway is a non-profit charitable organisation and a registered service provider for the NDIS, but receives no government funding. This facility specialises in providing much needed respite care for people with disabilities and their carers.
The amount raised in one day was a credit to the hardworking Canton Mixed Bowlers Committee but would not have been possible without the support of Wyong Leagues Club by waiving the Green Fees, and member, Paul Pollack, who canvassed local businesses for donations that enabled a huge raffle to be run.
A big thank you to all who participated to make this day such an outstanding success.

Canton Mixed Bowlers on Anzac Day
Twenty two members of the Canton Mixed Bowlers paid their respects to our fallen servicemen and women by participating in this year's Anzac Day March that started from The Village Green, Toukley at 9am on Anzac Day 25th April and marched to the Toukley RSL Cenotaph for the service and wreath laying ceremony. An added treat was a low level fly-past performed by an R.A.A.F fighter jet.
Marching as a group for the first time, their colourful lawn bowls uniforms made them easily recognisable among the marchers.
It was pleasing to see so many young people from local schools and scout groups in uniform joining the march to help pay tribute to their forefathers and mothers who fought for the freedoms that we all enjoy today.
After the march the bowlers met at their home club, Canton Beach Sports Club, for an “Aussie-style” lunch of pies and sausage rolls washed down with a beverage, followed by a game of mixed bowls. The bowlers voted the march a success and hope to do it again next Anzac Day.
